SPECIAL GIFTS FOR SPECIAL FUNDS
Gifts to VNA may be specified to benefit:
- VNA Hospice for special needs of the terminally ill
- VNA Home Health Care for present home bound patients who are in need
- VNA Endowment, the “rainy day fund” for present and future home health or hospice needs of Erie County residents. Only the income from this fund will be used; the principal remains intact.
Other special funds include:
Wings of Hope, VNA Hospice Memorial Butterfly Release - In 2005, VNA Hospice presented the area’s first memorial butterfly release. Now an annual tradition, it is held at 1:00 p.m.on the first Sunday in August. Because the butterfly is often used as a symbol of the cycle of life, birth, transition, healing and renewal, it is a fitting theme for this unique event. The public is invited to join with VNA Hospice to celebrate life, commemorate a special occasion or remember those who have passed on. The ceremony includes music, inspirational messages and a public reading of the names of those being remembered.
Donations of $25.00 per name benefit the work of VNA Hospice Services of Erie County. At the ceremony, donors may release butterflies, or watch as hundreds of butterflies take flight. As the butterflies float skyward, so too do the good wishes and prayers of those who watch them fly. For those unable to attend, VNA volunteers release butterflies at the appointed time. Wings of Hope is free and open to the public.

VNA Hospice Tree of Memories is an annual holiday tradition, honoring the memory of loved ones in a unique way. To recognize your gift of $10 or more, a handmade, personalized angel ornament is placed on a VNA Hospice Tree of Memories in memory of or in honor of a loved one. The VNA Hospice Trees are on display from Thanksgiving through December 31 at the Blasco Memorial Library and branches of the Erie County Library System, the Union City Public Library and the Rice Avenue Community Public Library in Girard. A tree in the VNA office foyer is kept lit throughout the holiday season to celebrate the lives of all those who are remembered. After the holiday season the handmade ornaments, personalized with the names of loved ones, are sent to donors along with deepest gratitude from the VNA.
Donations help VNA provide:
- Hospice services, medications and supportive equipment to terminally ill patients of limited means
- Final wishes for patients facing end-of-life challenge
- Counseling for grieving individuals and families
- Grief support groups for anyone in need of compassionate counseling

ULTIMATE/PLANNED GIFTS
You can make arrangements now to benefit the Visiting Nurse Association of Erie County in the future through a planned (or deferred) gift. Such gifts can also offer you income for life, income tax and estate planning advantages. In these ways, you can support the VNA of Erie County while also providing for your own or your loved ones’ futures.
A bequest is the most common type of planned gift. Gifts of life insurance are easy to arrange. Life income gifts, such as charitable annuities and trusts, can be established with cash or a variety of appreciated assets.

Charitable Gift Annuities
Charities have been offering gift annuities in the U.S. since 1927. Now, the Visiting Nurse Association of Erie County is pleased to announce the availability of this service to our loyal donors. A charitable gift annuity is a contract between the donor (you) and the issuing charity (the Visiting Nurse Association of Erie County). The donor transfers a gift of cash or appreciated securities to the VNA in exchange for a fixed dollar payment for life.
Benefits to You
- Increase in current income
- Fixed lifetime payment at a favorable rate (depending on age—see sample annuity rate chart) guaranteed by the VNA of Erie County
- Reduction in taxes—receive an income tax deduction for part of the gift, if you itemize
- Removal of property from federal and probate estate
- Avoidance of an immediate capital gain tax if your gift is made with appreciated securities
- No legal costs incurred, but you are encouraged to seek review by your own attorney
- Opportunity to make a current, irrevocable gift to the Visiting Nurse Association of Erie County
- Multiple gift annuities may be held simultaneously. You may establish more than one gift annuity. Some donors like to repeat the gift annuity process every year!

We will prepare an individualized proposal for you, showing your quarterly payments, and how much of your gift is a charitable deduction.
The VNA will issue gift annuities for $10,000 to $100,000:
- Cash or fair market value of securities valued at a minimum of $10,000 for single life annuities, and $15,000 for two lives, joint and survivor annuities.
- Annuitants must be at least 65 years of age.
With a gift annuity, you simultaneously make a charitable gift and provide guaranteed payments for life to yourself and/or another person. The fact that you are making a charitable gift may entitle you to income, gift and estate tax deductions.
