This map of the northeast United States shows hospice benefit use as a percentage of the population that is chronically or terminally ill. Despite a generous benefit by Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance people are reluctant to get hospice care as they believe that the change in care to comfort and quality of life rather than treatment means giving up; a very difficult idea for many to accept. There is much evidence to suggest that hospice care relieves pain, saves money and actually extends life only about one third of the people in our area take advantage of this excellent service.
